Heavy Breath: updates about nothing (5/18/12):

Writing is going really well. we have lots and lots of different ideas and several completed songs. talking about some next level shit here. really looking forward to hitting the studio in August to record.

We’re debuting a new song at our next show, Wednesday May 23rd at BAR in New Haven. We’re playing with Reservoir and Aficionado who are both on tour. The show is FREE and 21+ and starts at 9 PM. so go, drink some beer, eat some pizza, and if you’re too young have your dad (or someone else’s dad, or your mom, etc) bring you.

June 22nd to 24th we’re doing a weekend with our friends in Matahari from Mass. Check out their music on bandcamp - http://matahari.bandcamp.com They dropped an excellent 7” on Get Young Records last summer.

Still working on our July midwest tour with Reservoir. booking is a bitch. when we have the shows we will announce them.

You may now return to your regularly scheduled Friday entertainment.

Her eyes were as dark as the deep ocean and I could see, sea, see the abyss. I felt safe in her embrace. I found truth in her kiss. It said, “You will never love someone as they deserve. You’ll always be a coward, shallow, and perverse. You try to make things better, only end up getting hurt. Video: Baby Grand - “Asleep On The T” (Live at Point Beach Club House. Milford CT - 3/10/12)

Connecticut up-and-comers Baby Grand effectively stole the show at Milford’s Point Beach Club House on Saturday, when they opened for Hostage Calm, Defeater, Night Owls, and Manners. Although I hadn’t listened to them before, I was immediately blown away by their intense, visceral, and dynamic performance. In retrospect, their surprisingly excellent set was the highlight of the night.

If you don’t believe me, check out this video of them performing their song “Asleep On The T” above. The slow, heavy, instrumental atmosphere of this song sent chills down my spine when they played it, and the singer’s wearied, razor-like voice was enough to procure a serious emotional reaction from me. By the time he cuts loose around the 4 minute mark, the song builds to an overpowering crescendo that rivals the best work of some post-rock bands. This is seriously worth watching a couple times.

FYI: Disregard the singer’s heavily accented ramblings at the beginning, or don’t. It’s endearing, I guess. If anything, it makes it all the more surprising when the band actually starts to play. The music starts around the 1:15 mark.
